The Dove Who Killed His Wife

A long, long time ago, there lived a pair of doves in a forest. When spring came, they found one tree with especially dense foliage. The male dove told his wife to stay right there, and off he flew on his own.

In the fall, he returned to that tree to find his wife still sitting there, waiting for him. The leaves on the tree had become yellow and few of them were left on the branches.

The male dove said to his wife, "You made all the leaves on the tree yellow!" His wife said, "It wasn't me, I didn't eat any of them." The male dove was very angry with his wife, so he killed her! The next year, when the spring came, the tree became green again. The male dove began to think, "Oh, my wife was not wrong! She really didn't eat the leaves!" He felt very very bad, and he regretted what he had done very much.

From that time forth, the birds in the forest could always be heard singing this song:

"The male dove who lives in the forest,
His wings are rainbow-colored and his eyes are red,
He cannot tell red from black,
After he killed his wife, he was filled with regret."
